Ecosystem response to CO(2): The MAPLE project results

Funded under: FP5-EESD

Abstract

The MAPLE project was funded by the EU environment Research Programme. Its main objective was to identify and characterize the occurrence of microevolutionary traits in native plants from a number of carbon dioxide springs. Geneticallly isolated populations of several species have been particularly considered with the aim of identifying genetically fixed variation in their response to elevated CO(2).

Collaborative and interdisciplinary research has been undertaken by different groups about the biochemical, physiological and ecophysiological features of these populations aiming to provide a sound basis to assess the potential long-term effects on natural ecosystems. .
