Abstract

The world community is acting to safeguard the interests of future generations through agreements such as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and its Kyoto Protocol. This contains legally binding commitments to either reduce or limit the emissions of six greenhouse gases. Systems for verification reporting and accountability are required. This paper examines the role of satellites as a source of information for implementation of compliance with the terms of the Kyoto Protocol, especially concerning those parts of the Protocol covering the use of biological sources and sinks.
