Abstract

Geostar is the acronym for the Geophysical and Oceanographic Station for Abyssal Research. The objective of the Geostar 1 MAST3 project is to develop a benthic station with geophysical and oceanographical observation abilities to perform long term scientific missions in deep waters down to 4000 metres. Geostar benefits from a previous MAST 2 contract, Decibel. The first scientific mission of Geostar took place in the Adriatic Sea, approximately 50km offshore of the Italian city of Ravenna, at a depth of 42m, from 13 August to 1 September 1998.

A report on the Geostar prototype during its first sea trial was contracted by the Commission from Mr J Y Jourdain of Thomsen Marconi Sonar SAS, who prepared the present volume. .
