Abstract

This publication was carried out within the framework of COST Action A10.

The decision to undertake a comparative analysis of defence industries in Belgium and Hungary was made during a meeting of working group 'Restructuring of defence industries in Europe'. The Belgian and Hungarian representatives realized that there were many similarities between the defence industries of their countries, since their structures during the cold war seemed similar. Victims of the new international situation, the fall in military demand and unbridled world wide competition, the size of the Hungarian and Belgian, defence industries fell to an unprecedented level. More than other countries, they had to face tough decisions as to whether to leave the market, consolidate or sell out to foreign companies.

This report is the first result of the analysis; further research will be published as part of a general publication of the working group 'Restructuring of defence industries in Europe', chaired by Claude Serfati (France). e).
