Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

The scope of the current project is to propose a methodology to be used to deal with the problem of the contamination of soil at the European level; namely, the aim is the identification of indicators for contaminated sites. The background for the development of indicators is a multidimensional analysis of the issue, which is done in the framework of the model adopted by the European Environment Agency for its environmental monitoring and reporting activities. This model is known as DPSIR. It treats the environmental issues as along a feedback loop which drives from the causes, passing through the pressures on the environment, the changes in the state of the environment, the impacts, finally leading to the society's responses and to their effects on any other step of the chain. It allows including in the analysis not only the environmental, but also the social and the economic implications of the issue.
