Abstract

The under-representation of women in fields of science, technology and development is an issue of increasing importance on the European agenda. Following concerns expressed by the European Commission, the European Parliament, the Council and within Member states, this report was commissioned by the European Commissions Research Directorate General, to review gender aspects of research policy in the EU.

'Promoting Excellence through mainstreaming gender equality' is the key objective of this publication, which was prepared by the European Technology Assessment Network (ETAN) expert working group on women and science. As well as reviewing the position of women in science and technology, this publication makes specific recommendations to a wide range of bodies, including the Commission, the European Parliament, the Member States and organizations that educate, fund and employ scientists. It is anticipated that the work carried out by the ETAN expert group will play an important part in the development and implementation of the best practise policies, which will allow Europe to maximise its total research potential l
