Abstract

Located in Ispra (IT), the Environment Institute is one of the eight institutes that constitute the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission. The Environment Institutes prime objectives are to investigate the level and fate of contaminants in the air, water and soil, to assess the effects of those contaminants on the environment and individuals and to promote a sustainable energy supply. The institute concentrates its efforts on the reduction or prevention of damage to the environment, thus contributing to improving the quality of life of the European citizen. This publication gives an overview of the Institutes activities over 1998 and its involvement in the 5th Framework programme.
