Oceanography of the eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea

Funded under: FP5-EESD

Although the eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea are two basins greatly influencing each other, the exchange of scientific information between various research groups working in the regions has been somewhat limited. As part of its continuing programme of research in marine science, the European Commission jointly with the National Centre for Marine Research, Athens, and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, Unesco, sponsored an international conference entitled 'Oceanography of the eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea'. The conference was held from 23 to 26 February 1999 at the Zappeion International Conference Centre, Athens, and brought together existing knowledge on the functioning and the similarities and differences of the eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea.

The main objective of the international conference was to provide the opportunity to the various groups involved in the research of the eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea to meet an address their research experiences and scientific achievements in order to enhance cooperation and avoid publication of research efforts. It was the first time that a conference on this subject and of this size had taken place in the region, and there were more than 350 participants from 27 different countries of the European Union, the southern and eastern Mediterranean and central and eastern Europe.

This publication includes the programme of the conference, the abstracts of presentations and reports on the conclusions of working groups. ps.
