Abstract

Reference materials (RMs) are produced in different institutional frameworks in Europe following different certification schemes. Examples from national and international laboratories as well as from the EC funded collaboration scheme (also known as BCR) are given in order to provide a better understanding of the followed approaches.

In the field of microscopic and microbeam analytical standardization, three exciting developments have taken place in recent years in Europe:

- the certification of a photomask linewidth standard (BCR CRM 676),

- the production and certification of a micro-structured RM for electron, ion and X-ray microbeam analysis (IRMM CRM),

- the study and partial application of several approaches to assess the micro-homogeneity of bulk RMs.

These developments are described in some detail in the presentation. entation.
