The conference on flexibility held on February 18 and 19 1999 at the Linz University contributed to the discussion of this important economic and social change and its possible implications for the future. Representations from science, politics and business life in Austria and beyond contributed to the following work.

Flexibility and qualifications are increasingly important today. The research project "Flexibility, transferability, mobility as targets of vocational education and training" (Frank Achtenberg, University of Gttengen, and Wim Nijhof, University of Twente) should help to bring together the experience, action and knowledge of different European countries on the subject with the aim of improving mobility. The conference should also make a strong contribution to this end. .
