Information Society Technologies: A Research, Technological Development and Demonstration Programme for the Fifth Frame Programme

Funded under: FP5-IST

On 22 December, 1998, the Council of Research Ministers adopted the subject of the Information Society in the Fifth European Union IDT Frame Programme, defined in the proposal submitted by the Information Society Technologies (IST).

The IST programme is applied via a series of yearly work plans which are developed in close collaboration with industry, the academic world and users organizations. The advisory group (ISTAG) and the IST Committee advise on the work plan, thus helping to define priorities and set up plans of action.

The work plan for 2000 establishes the plans of action and the structures for the calls for proposals that shall be published during the year 2000. An explanatory table summarizes their expected contents and timetable.

Following the first call for proposals, in 1999, 2,500 applications were received. An independent group of experts selected 550 of these proposals for grants within an available budget of approximately 920 million euros. The revised work plan for 2000 is based on the experience acquired during this call and will take into account the projects that are starting out. A second call took place on 1 October, 1999, the results of which will be taken into account in future revisions of the work plan.
