Extension of Quality Assurance in Water Microbiology to Cohension Countries "EQUASE"

Funded under: FP5-GROWTH

The objective of the EQUASE project was to transfer knowledge and expertise regarding assurance programmes to those member states in Europe that did not have programmes in place such as Belgium, Greece, Ireland and Spain. The EU directives for water quality require that member countries must carry out microbiological analysis to protect health and the environment for the presence of such contaminants as Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The quality of data collected must be very high to achieve the exacting standards of the EU. The project ensured that their was direct communication between laboratories to enable greater exchange of information and better quality of work. In total, 237 laboratories took an active part in EQUASE in all the member countries studied. In each country there is a leader laboratory that co-ordinates the efforts of the other laboratories and compiles the results to a format acceptable to the EU. The project successfully introduced testing procedures to those countries without a programme for microbiological water quality testing and brought those tests up to a high standard in order for the individual laboratories to become accredited.
