A Partnership of Matra Systems and ACRI were contracted by JRC to define and design a distributed information system called DESIMA. The DESIMA demonstrator was developed to deal with processing data about coastal monitoring and management, providing a valuable information resource for users. The demonstrator was built using Common Object Request Broker Architecture or CORBA which provides a platform for independent code and will integrate with World Wide Web protocols and browsers. The aim of DESIMA is to connect with real time data and models so that users will find the most up to date information. The demonstrator has a built in tutorial for first time users taking them through all aspects of the site. It is hoped that the demonstrator will be maintained and developed by JRC, but problems over software ownership may make this difficult.

DESIMA was set up with two clear scenarios for demonstration purposes. The first scenario is sea defence which is based on a study appraising coastal management in England. In order to effectively assess flood risks and their management the user needs data from several sources. It is the role of DESIMA to collect this data and disseminates it as required. An oil spillage is used as the second demonstration where DESIMA can be used to estimate the rate of pollution using information from many sources describing all environmental variables. .
