Abstract

In the frame of the EuroLandscape project, the Space Applications Institute (SAI) of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission is working towards the creation of a pan-European database of catchment boundaries and river networks. Together with the physical and socio-economic characterization of the mapped catchments, this database will serve for the analysis of data on water quality and quantity collected by the European Environmental Agency (EEA) as well as for the modelling of hydrological and landscape processes throughout Europe.

This report reviews the possibilities and limitations to delineate catchments and drainage networks from digital elevation models to different grid-cell sizes, with specific consideration of the large area to be covered by the Catchment Characterization and Modelling (CCM) activity of EuroLandscape. It further discusses issues related to their characterization. .
