Pulsoximeters are one of the most important advances in the medical field in recent years. The Japanese engineer Takuyo Aoyagi discovered this method in 1972. The Americans William New and Jack Lloyd recognised the market potential of the product in the 1980s. This equipment can be used for diagnostics and for therapy. The above mentioned work compares the different models available.

The examination and certification of pulsoximeters is also looked at. Although a European Union standard already exists (EN 865) the situation is not satisfactory. As the readings of such an apparatus are of vital importance, stricter requirements or regulations for testing will be necessary. The above mentioned work contains contributions and suggestions regarding these issues. .
