The scientific background of COST Action 821 has been presented in a book entitled "Impact of arbuscular mycorrhizas on sustainable agriculture and natural ecosystems" published by Birkhõuser Verlag, Basle, Switzerland, in 1994 (240 pp.) and edited by Silvio Gianinazzi (FR) and Hannes Sch³epp (CH), respectively Chairman and Vice-Chairman of this action.

COST 821 was subsequently built up around five working groups:

1. Mycorrhizal fungi: biodiversity, phylogenetics and population dynamics;
2. Genetics and physiology of mycorrhizal systems;
3. Mycorrhizas in abiotic and biotic stress alleviation and plant protection;
4. Mycorrhizas in sustainable systems: their role in biogeochemical cycling;
5. Banque EuropÚenne des Glomales (BEG) (see report of 1994 activities, pp. 14-20). 14-20).
