When we purchase a "reference material", what do we buy?
Editorial comment on the nature of 'reference materials' used for calibration or validation of measurements, such as weights. It is argued that there is always uncertainty about those reference materials, and therefore 'traceability' of the value or standard expressed by the reference material becomes centrally important.
