Assessment of the commercial success of the ECLAIR programme (1988-93)

Funded under: FP5-LIFE QUALITY

The ECLAIR programme (European collaborative linkage of agriculture and industry through research 1988-1993) was designed with the clear intention of improving the links between agriculture and industry by encouraging close collaboration in individual RTD projects based on progress made in generic technologies such as biotechnology, information sciences and process engineering. The specific purpose of this publication almost twelve years after the launching of ECLAIR is to assess the commercial impact of these 42 research projects upon their respective business sectors. The findings indicate that 15 of the projects resulted in actual products already on the market, 6 resulted in products still undergoing market trials, and a further 15 have reached the prototype, pilot or trials stage. The programme has undoubtedly helped to bring many fledgling ideas in the life sciences sector to full market fruition thus generating employment and increasing European competitiveness.
