Abstract

The objectives of this research has been to investigate the main cause of wear of the refractory in the tuyeres area and to develop a new tuyere/refractory system that can improve the convertor productivity.

Two different types of mechanisms of erosion of the refractory lining have been studied: the erosion due to the back-attack phenomenon (mechanical origin) and the erosion due to thermal shocks that arise in the refractory bricks in the tuyeres area.

Various types of tuyeres have been tested by two different cold models (respectively scale 1:3 and 1:6), scaled from the real AOD convertor of Terni steelworks, in order to identify the dependence on the back-attack phenomenon (frequency and intensity) and on the fluid-dynamics regime (mixing time and flow velocity) of the geometrical size of the tuyeres and of the blowing parameters (gas flowrate).

Test results have shown that conditions which help to reduce the back-attack phenomenon are obtained by means of rectangular geometry of the tuyere's tips. tips.
