The objective for the project has been to investigate the potential to use pre-heated or pre-molten mould powder, especially at the start of casting in order to achieve higher quality of the first semis cast by reaching steady-state conditions faster.

There were numerous difficulties with melting of the casting mould powder at site on the industrial bloom caster due to long heating times with wear of the crucible used for melting.

In the latter part of the plant trials liquid starting casting mould powder was used, which due to its chemical composition is easier to melt than casting mould powder under steady operation. Eight plant trials were carried out in the series with liquid casting mould powder and measurements and documentation were done within the project developed "combined friction force measuring system".

The results from these trials shows that when molten casting mould powder was used, steady-state regarding speed and friction forces acting on the strand can be reached faster than with normal use of casting mould powder. wder.
