Abstract

The objective of this study is the validation of the Radiello diffusive sampler for nitrogen dioxide (N02) measurement as an indicative technique of measurement. The validation is based on the recommendations of the proposal European standard for CEN for the validation of diffusive samplers. The parameters in conformity with the requirements are: blank value, desorption efficiency, back diffusion, storage after exposure (storage), sampler integrity (leak test), interference of NO and O3, while storage before exposure (shelf life) and expanded uncertainty were not in agreement with the requirements.

In conclusion, the Radiello diffusive sampler does not always satisfy the data quality objective of the European NO2 daughter Directive for accuracy (25%). Laboratory experiments under extreme exposure conditions showed that the expanded uncertainty may be over this objective. However, field experiments performed over 4 months at a rural station gave an expanded uncertainty lower than 25% around the limit value of the European daughter Directive that is 40 µg/m3..
