Establishment of a Migration Test Method for Fatty Content

Abstract

A method of test to determine if a food makes "fatty contact" with a packaging material, within the meaning of Directive 85/572/EEC pertaining to materials and articles intended to come into contact with foodstuffs, has been elaborated and refined. The method involves measuring the migration of the fat-soluble additive, 1,4-diphenyl-1,3-butadiene (DPBD) deliberately impregnated into a polyethylene film for the purpose. The level of migration of the dye into the foodstuffs under test indicates the extent of the fatty contact. The result can then be used to decide on an appropriate simulant to use for testing packaging intended to come into contact with that type of foodstuff. The results of the test can also be used to decide what reduction factor should be applied to any test conducted using the fatty simulant olive oil.

Data for the migration of DPBD into forty different foodstuffs under different conditions of time and temperature are presented and the results are compared with reduction factors given in Directive 85/572/EEC. The precision of the test is acceptable with an average relative standard deviation (rsd) of 13% for all the foodstuffs tested. The test has helped to classify particular food stuffs which either cannot easily be classified using the Directive 85/572/EEC or which may be mis-classified using the tables in the Directive. .
