EC reference materials for impact toughness - traceability and uncertainty

Abstract

A number of different standards exist world-wide for Charpy impact testing and Charpy machine verification, with minor technical variations, but, most importantly, traceable to different master machines (with different performances) or to master batch verification specimens. The value of Charpy impact strength therefore varies according to the testing system adopted. A long-term international comparison, using common master batch specimens will provide a link between these systems. In parallel, a new method of uncertainty calculation, consistent with the ISO Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty of Measurement, has been developed for the certification of BCR Charpy verification CRMs, taking into account batch heterogeneity, uncertainty on master batch mean value and uncertainty arising from the comparison of candidate CRMs with master batches.
