Excitation of octupole, beta and gamma bands of 238U by inelastic neutron-scattering

Abstract

238U neutron elastic and inelastic scattering cross sections were measured for incident energies of 2, 2.5, 3 and 3.5 MeV. Differential cross sections were obtained at three angles for the unresolved levels of the ground-state rotational band, and for four groups of levels with excitation energies between 0.63 and 2.10 MeV. Angle-integrated cross sections were obtained for all groups except the ground-state rotational band.

Hauser-Feshbach-Moldauer calculations with coupled-channels estimates of elastic scattering and direct reaction contributions to the inelastic scattering cross sections provide a good overall description of the data. Above 3 MeV the data of groups 1 and 2 are dominated by the direct contribution and therefore allow a better determination of the octupole, hexadecupole and gamma deformations of the soft-deformable rotator model that was used. .
