This project relates to the optimization of the post-rolling cooling of high-carbon steel wire rods, with the aim of ensuring better achievement of the desired properties and better homogeneity of microstructure and properties.

Boundary conditions for the simulation of wire rod cooling have been determined: austenite grain size after rolling and heat transfer in the water cooling section and on the conveyor belt.

A specific device has been used to measure the rod temperature on conveyors, allowing a good accuracy at the centre of the conveyor belt.

The different modelling steps have been validated by comparison with industrial measurements.

The model can be used for different purposes: for instance to define the cooling presets of an existing conveyor, to evaluate the influence of austenite grain size variations - controlled by the finishing temperature - or to design modifications of the cooling equipment. ipment.
