Research and technical development in Europe - 36 examples of projects (II)

Funded under: FP5

What new vaccines and medicines will be available in the future? What constitutes healthy food? How far can we go in interfering with living beings? Are the information society and new technologies good for all, or for only a few? How can we do more to look after the atmosphere, the earth, water and our environment? These are questions asked every day. Together with many others, they reflect the concerns and major challenges to which research offers its share of answers.

These "thirty-six projects" are a few examples of this. Thirty-six is not a lot. They account for only a tiny part of the research undertaken by the European Union. However, the course each project takes often reveals a similar scenario: formulating a problem, defining approaches, some avenues excluded and others explored at European level, shortcuts, results and hopes, confirmations, new research to transform the results of a particular idea into an innovation - and to gain something in the process. All contribute, each in its own field, to improving the quality of life in Europe, and beyond. .
