Design for living - the European City of Tomorrow

Funded under: FP5-EESD

Already, four out of five of all European Union citizens live in urban areas. The buildings and traffic in and around cities are huge consumers of resources, and massive producers of waste and pollution. Efforts to protect the environment and improve the quality of life must above all address pressing common problems of urban living. Radical new approaches to the governance, planning and management of our cities, and to the preservation of their cultural heritage, are urgently needed across Europe.

This brochure aims to publicize the past and present research efforts of the European Union in the field of urban sustainability, explaining the Key Action "City of Tomorrow and Cultural Heritage" to a general audience. It examines the context and goals of the Key Action's four themes - city planning and management, cultural heritage, the built environment, and urban transport. It also introduces its objectives and working methods to potential proposers, including academic researchers, local authorities, technology suppliers and both business and individual end-user groups. .
