  • The optimization of the conditions of coke-production ovens to improve the quality of coke and increase the residual life of the setup in conditions of reduced productivity.


The aim of this project is the settlement of coking oven battery operative conditions in the case of a reduced coke demand in order to assure the extension of battery residual life and maintenance of mechanical and granulometric coke quality. This research was developed at the coke plant battery of Taranto ILP Steelworks. Trial periods were schedules at decreasing productivity levels characterized by (a) distillation time ranging from 20 to 24 hours and (b) coking average temperatures ranging from 1100 degrees to 1250 degrees Celsius.

During experimental periods the following activities were developed: operative data storing; coals and produced coke quality data storing; gas pressure inside cells and blend temperatures measurements; chemical analysis and measurement of the combustion fume temperature; pushing force measurement of the combustion fume temperature; pushing force measurement; optimization of the thermal status of the battery; measurement of the coke surface temperature at the outletting; check of the coke quality.

The experimental data obtained from the campaigns confirmed that the quality of the produced coke was kept good and the decrease of the ovens productivity do not show any particular effect on it. it.
