This contains extended abstracts of three joint working group meetings of the COST Action 67: "Chemodynamics and water quality protection in natural porous media".

The session on "Modelling of reactive transport in groundwater: from molecular scale to field scale" was held in Mont Sainte-Odile, France from 11 to 13 June 1996. Well-controlled laboratory experiments and sophisticated modelling were concluded as drivers for better understanding of sorption, degradation and transformation of pollutants in soil, bedrock and groundwater.

The session on "Biotic and abiotic redox processes in porous media" was held in Gardermoen, Norway from 2 to 4 May 1997. The reducing environment of deep groundwater continuously changes the contaminants of the porous media and the water due to their slow physico-chemical reactions and adapted micro-organisms. Developed sampling methods, in situ measurements and modelling tools are needed to establish better processes and pathways of decontamination.

The session "Designing a field study" was held in Kiel, Germany, from 6 to 10 May 1998. Importance of well-designed field studies for solving common and special problems in diverse scales of pollution processes in different environments were emphasized.

Reliable predictions of contaminant movements in soil and the very vulnerable groundwater in large timescale is a continuous need of societies which are dependent on drinking water resources. Researchers have started concerted work to develop new laboratory methods, field experiments and modelling approaches for multi-component studies on pollutants behaviour, transportation, transformations and accumulations in natural porous media. media.
