Strategic issues related to a 6th Euratom Framework Programme (2002-2006)

Funded under: FP6-EURATOM

The Scientific and Technical Committee Euratom (STC) is attached to the European Commission and advises the Commission on all nuclear issues, covering the whole range from fission and fusion to radiation protection.

Preparations are now under way to go beyond the current 5th Framework Programme (1998-2002) by reflecting on the strategic issues to be covered by a future European research programme, or 6th Framework Programme. It was therefore decided to prepare this paper as a first STC contribution to the discussion on appropriate nuclear energy research strategies to be pursued in the wider context of a sustainable European development with the capacity for flexible responses to future challenges.

In this issue paper, the STC presents its views on the general outline of a research strategy in a 20-50 year perspective and beyond. The paper represents the considered opinion of the STC Members in their attempt to look at future perspectives, based on their long and extensive experience in the nuclear field, both in the industry and in government. The more specific research strategies will be discussed in a forthcoming, more extensive report, scheduled for the end of this
