Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

The article describes the research work within a project concerning the monitoring of the urban dynamic of the Ruhr area by using multi-temporal remote sensing data. This project carried out by order of the European Commission for several European urban agglomerations shall give information about the development of the land use within the last 50 years. The resulting information shall be the basis for a sustainable urban development planning.

A special problem was the investigation of representative historical aerial and satellite imagery data. The analysis of the four imagery data sets was carried out by a comparative visual interpretation. The choice of the working method was determined by the different characteristics of the imagery data and the high degree of details of the land use classes to be analysed.
