Abstract

This paper briefly communicates recent European Commission activities in the development of two practical tools to support implementation of its Directive on the control of major accident hazards involving dangerous substances (Seveso II Directive):

-The MARS tool to manage information describing the spectrum of accident causation and evolution at industrial establishments that fall under Seveso 11.
-The SPIRS tool to manage data describing the risk potential of such establishments.

Both the MARS and SPIRS tools have recently been released in new versions and will soon be used not only in the EU Seveso II context, but also for the purposes of the OECD Chemical Accidents Programme and for the UN-ECE Convention on the Transboundary Effects of Industrial Accidents.
