The fifth European Symposium on Stratospheric Ozone was convened by CNRS, INSU, CNES and the Research DG of the European Commission. The purpose of the symposium was to discuss the recent results of European research on stratospheric ozone.

Each session comprised overview talks and talks on individual studies and posters. An important part of the meeting was the presentation and discussion of the results of the third European Stratospheric Experiment on Ozone (Theseo), whose main field activities took place during the winter and spring of 1998-99. A summary of the early results from Theseo, written after the symposium, is presented in this volume of proceedings. Other research presented at the meeting included analyses of long-term measurements of the chemical and physical composition of the stratosphere, ozone loss in the polar and mid-Iatitudes, the possible links between the stratosphere and climate change, and instrument and algorithm development.
