A training course was held on 10 to 15 May 1998 in Leiden, The Netherlands, with the aim of improving dosimetry in radiobiology. The course was jointly organised by the European Radiation Protection, Education and Training Programme (ERPET), the European Radiation Dosimetry Group (Eurados), the European Late Effects Project Group (EULEP), the Department of Clinical Oncology of the Leiden University Medical Centre and the IRI/TNO Centre for Radiological Protection and Dosimetry. The lectures were arranged under the categories: Introduction to dosimetry (Chapters 1 to 6), Instrumentation and results (Chapters 7 to 13), Exposure arrangements (Chapters 14 to 19) and Advanced topics (Chapters 20 to 26).

The course was attended by scientists from different institutes in western Europe, the Ukraine and India. The practical exercises of the X-ray facility of the Department of Clinical Oncology of the LUMC included measurement of air kerma, HVL, field flatness and dose distribution inside a phantom. The 26 lectures, presented by an international group of experts, are compiled in the present course textbook.
