The Mission of the EI is to carry out research in support of the EU policy for the protection of the environment and the citizen. Prime objectives of EI are to investigate the level and fate of contaminants in the air, water and soil, to assess the effects of those contaminants upon the environment and individuals and to promote a sustainable energy supply.

This annual report looks at the past year's accomplishments, projects and programs under the auspices of the Fifth Framework Program, whilst listing its project orientated structure operated on sound project-management principles in accordance with the JRC"s Quality Policy. It aims at optimising the use of resources and the delivery of results to the end users of our research. It comprises eleven major projects, which maintain the momentum developed by the Institute in the 4th Framework Programme.
