Abstract

The purpose of this study was to measure the radon concentration in the tunnels of a hydroelectric power station under construction in Piedmont, Italy. The study commenced in 1998 and finished in 2000. Both active and passive methods were used for radon measurements. The active method used was the Alphaguard monitor. Regular checks on the air radon concentration, at the tunnel work-face, were performed during working periods. The passive method, the Karlsruhe diffusion chamber sealed in polyethylene, was used to measure the long-term radon concentration including non-working periods. The results show clearly, how the radon concentration in tunnels is influenced by the ventilation rate. Several measurements were made both with working and non-working ventilation with the active monitor. In addition gamma spectrometry was performed on various rock samples and Till dosimeters were used for gamma dose measurements.
