Abstract

The object of the study was to measure radon-222 concentrations, both in the soil and buildings of the JRC site Ispra, in order to compile a radon risk map.

The study is divided into two parts: soil measurements and indoor measurements.

For measuring soil radon-222 concentration passive track detectors in Karlsruhe beakers suspended inside a pvc tube were used. The tube is open at the lower end and buried in the soil to a depth of 70 cm. This application, developed at the JRC Radioprotection Unit, was calibrated at BfS in Berlin. 38 measurement sites were chosen to cover the whole site area. A geological study was performed in order to understand the relationship between radon emission and soil type. The measurements commenced on August 1998 and were completed in 1999. The aim of long term measurements was to take into account seasonal variations which are critical for outdoor measurements. In addition TLD dosimeters for (greek Beta) and y radiation measurements were used.

For indoor measurements passive track detectors in Karlsruhe beakers for long term measurements were used. and at the same time periodical controls with an active radon monitor were performed.

For indoor monitoring several offices were chosen expecially ground floor and under ground work areas.

The results showed that the JRC territory is not a radon prone area.
