Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

The present report intended to summarize in a single volume and to the benefit of the colleagues inside and outside of the European Commission, what has been in the past years subject of an intense scientific cooperation between the Environment Institute of the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission and the Ente Autonomo del Flumendosa, one of the largest drinking water producers in Sardinia.

Both institutions identified amongst their research priorities the need to explore new ways of finding additional water resources at highest priority and a partnership between an European research institute owing all kinds of laboratories needed in environmental research, from analytical to technological capabilities, and an industrial national player, disposing of 14 artificial lakes in widely varying geological settings for the collection of raw water in view of its potabilization, all kinds of technological true-scale installations and long experience in handling countless critical water supply situations in a country which is blessed with just 40 cm of rain a year and still more, whose groundwater reserves are largely compromised by chloride contamination from evaporite bed leaching, is certainly to be considered as a lucky marriage.

The CATCHWATER Project arrived in a crucial moment; while the availability of water of good quality and sufficient quantity is more and more getting a privilege of the happy few in many countries, the European Commission had just collected, bundled and targetized in the frame of the Taskforce "Water" the research and development needs in the EU, and the CATCHWATER-Project shall have the function of some kind of resonance body, disseminating the results throughout Europe and thereby triggering more projects of similar size and significance.
