The wider picture: enlargement and cohesion in Europe
Before the completion of the next decennium Europe will have attained political and economic unity If the plans of the European Commission become reality in time, the then enlarged European Union will cover 28 countries or nearly the entire European continent with about 500 million people and it will represent the largest (by purchasing power) common market in the world. It is worth mentioning that all this will be reached by means of a historically unique and peaceful process based on voluntary agreements between autonomous governments. It is evident that such a process represents one of the major political undertakings for the coming 10 years and beyond.
