This document covers both the conceptual and practical aspects of patient dosimetry in (i) general diagnostic radiology, (ii) mammography and (iii) computed tomography.

The basic dosimetric concepts and reference quantities such as entrance surface dose when the patient is present (ESDpp), entrance surface dose when the patient is absent (ESDpa)' dose-area product (DAP) and computed tomography dose index (CTDI) are discussed in Chapter 2. Dose measurements can be made both on patients and on phantoms. For such measurements both ionisation chambers and TL detectors are widely used. This documents concentrates on the application of TLD, which is the subject of Chapter 3. In this chapter not only are the principles of TLD described, but also any practical aspects, including the pitfalls. Performance requirements and operational procedures are discussed in detail. Chapters 4 and 5 provide details on how successful measurements of radiation doses should be made in the diagnostic radiology department. Finally, in view of possible accreditation of the laboratory providing the dosimetric services, the document provides some general information on developing and implementing a quality assurance programme for such services (Chapter 6).
