Abstract

This study addresses issues highlighted in the First European Innovation Action Plan regarding the weaknesses in Europe of converting research into commercial success. It provides a snapshot of the experience of 50 companies fitting the description of New Technology-Based Firms (NTBF's). Each company has successfully applied research results, where public sector funding had been used, in its corporate development.

Corporate characteristics, success factors, barriers to success and recommendations for more effective or renewed public support measures are all presented. Also, 12 "Case Studies" from this grouping each show, in the context of an individual enterprise, examples of success in at least 2 of a specified range of important factors.

The value of the qualitative conclusions so arising is to provide insights and guidelines for more widespread, statistically valid surveys required in support of new policy initiatives among NTBF's.
