An introduction showing the need of internationally validated and harmonised methods for an appropriate food control is followed by a demonstration of the initiatives taken by the European Commission to tackle this issue. A particular emphasis is put on the activities of the Directorates General "Joint Research Centre" and "Research". The role and work programmes are highlighted. This is followed by the description of some selected examples on food analysis (mycotoxins, genetically modified organisms, food contact material, chocolate and wine)
