Abstract

The ESARDA Symposia are organized by the various ESARDA Parties in rotation. This year was the turn of the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, who chose Sevilla which already houses the premises the premises of one of its Institute, namely Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS). This Symposium marked the 30th anniversary of ESARDA -founded in 1969. It was the largest Symposium ever, both for the number of participants (230) and for the number of presentations (142). This is a tangible sign that the safeguards community needs, more than ever, to exchange information and experience, and that ESARDA is considered to be an appropriate forum for such an exchange. Also this year the JRC Safeguards R&D Programme celebrated its 30th anniversary, and this was highlighted in a keynote presentation in the opening session of the Symposium.by the JRC Director General, Mr. H.J. Allgeier.

Presentations covered the traditional spectrum of subjects, ranging from Safeguards Concepts to Safeguards Implementation Experience and to a number of technical and scientific issues. Among the technical papers, a large fraction was devoted to Non- Destructive Assay Techniques; this is a permanent feature of our symposia. not affected by the fact that NDA techniques are nowadays very mature and instruments have reached, in many cases, the stage of industrial production and commercial distribution.

The programme also included two special sessions, respectively devoted to "Other Verification Approaches" and "Consequences of INFCIRC/540 Implementation". Both issues are related to future developments of Safeguards.
