The COST action C6 "Town and infrastructure planning for safety and urban quality for pedestrians' comprises to date 36 researchers representing 12 of 32 COST member countries, and is one of the 15 actions of the urban civil engineering domain of the COST program.

Its main objectives and missions are to promote better safety and urban quality for pedestrians, particularly (but not only) for citizens with special needs - children, the elderly and the handicapped - and to suggest planning and maintenance techniques aimed at improving urban quality.

The action is taking an active part in the international conference "Living and walking in cities," that convenes every year Brescia (Italy). The present book contains the proceedings of the fifth edition of this event, which took place on 1 and 2 June 1998 and was entitled "elderly people's mobility and safety."
