  • Nuclear safety and the environment. Current situation concerning radioactive waste management and restoration of contaminated territories in and around the PA Mayak site

Abstract

The aim of this project is to draw a picture of the current waste management situation at PA Mayak, highlight safety aspects deserving further support from possible future technical assistance projects and to enable the definition of a possible optimised management scheme for radioactive waste and restoration of contaminated territories. The report details the five main areas investigated in the current study:

-The existing situation concerning radioactive waste management at PA Mayak.
-Plans for future radioactive waste management at PA Mayak.
-Situation at the cascade of lakes (industrial reservoirs with radioactive effluent, Techa Cascade of Reservoirs (TCR) along the Techa River, Staroye Boloto and contaminated flood-lands.
-A first-pass risk assessment for the TCR and Staroye Boloto
-Comments on the current waste management policy and recommendations for future work.
