Abstract

COST Action 814, 'Crop development for the cool and wet regions of Europe', was accepted by the COST Senior Officials' Committee in 1990. The memorandum of understanding was signed by eight countries and the first meeting of the Management Committee took place on 6 September 1991.

By the end of Round I, 19 countries had signed the memorandum of understanding and were actively participating in this concerted action. Round II was accepted by the COST Senior Officials' Committee on 25 January 1996.

During the last four years, more than 100 research teams from institutes and universities have cooperated closely in the following five working groups:

-Over-wintering and spring growth of white clover.
-Adapt ion of thermophilic crops.
-Alternative crops.
-Small grain cereals and pseudocereals.
-Alternative fibre crops.

The aim of the final conference was to present the progress made during the nine years of close cooperation. All contributions (keynote lectures, oral presentations, posters) are included in this publication.
