Abstract

This is the final report for the project funded by the European Commission DGXI, Environment, Nuclear Safety and Civil Protection (reference DGXVC-3/1166) entitled: Analysis of the medium and long term environmental and radiological consequences of the migration of radionuclides from the Karachay lake -identification of possible countermeasures.

The project aimed at analysing the medium and long term environmental and radiological consequences of the migration of radionuclides from Karachay lake and identify possible countermeasures. The study was split into four main tasks:
1. Translation, analysis and collation of currently available data regarding the environmental and radiological consequences of radionuclide migration from lake Karachay.
2. Forecasts of radionuclide migration over the next 300 years through groundwater flow and contaminant transport modelling.
3. Assessment of the radiological impact of radionuclide migration from lake Karachay in terms of dose uptake by critical population groups.
4. Identification and costing of additional countermeasures to reduce the radiological impact to the population.
