Abstract

The present report summarizes the experiences collected in the framework of a collaborative study aiming at the validation of a series of draft standards for the dissolution of solid waste materials, developed by the CEN TC 292/WG3 ("Characterisation of Waste -Parameters related to species soluble in mineral acid or water: analysis and digestion methods").A task group (M.I. Kisser (NUA, Austria), A. Giove (ENEL, Italy) and C. Yuste (SITA, France) has been established within CEN TC292/WG3 in order to organize and carry out the validation project for the evaluation of the performance characteristics of the following standards:

PrEN 13657 "Digestion for subsequent determination of aqua regia-soluble portion elements in waste":
A- Microwave assisted digestion with aqua regia in closed vessels
B- Microwave assisted digestion with aqua regia in semi-open vessels
C- Thermal heating digestion with aqua regia in reflux systems

PrEN 13656 "Microwave assisted digestion with HF + HNO3 + HCl for subsequent determination of elements in waste":
D- Microwave assisted digestion with HF + HNO3 + HCI in closed vessels
E- Microwave assisted digestion with HF + HNO3 + HCI in semi-open vessels

These drafts have been developed on the basis of the experience of the members of WG3 in this field, as well as on literature data.

The validation of the standards included an interlaboratory test for repeatability and reproducibility evaluation, according to ISO 5725, an accuracy test of the methods (when applicable) and a robustness study. The interlaboratory test was intended to evaluate the comparability of the methods, not the performance quality of the participating laboratories. All laboratories participated on a free-of-charge-basis and no previous laboratory selection has been carried out.
