This paper discusses the attempt to directly simulate in-situ measurements of dissipation rates in two different estuaries with the aid of a one-dimensional water-column model. The two estuaries were the weakly stratified Eastern Scheldt in the Southern part of the Netherlands and the strongly stratified Knebel Vig at the east cost of Jutland in Denmark. These measurements were carried out with free falling and rising shears probes also equipped with a conductivity and a fast temperature sensor. Along with that, measurements of many parameters needed for the forcing of the model have been carried out. Temperature and salinity were relaxed to measure profiles as a parameterisation of tracer advection.
