This paper presents a strategy for the fully coupled numerical modelling of Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) phenomena during fast transient dynamic events such as explosions, impacts and crashes. Three algorithms dealing with this issue are illustrated: one (FSA) based on purely geometrical considerations, a second one (UP) which may be directly derived from equilibrium, and a third hybrid method (FSCR) which shares the strengths of the previous two and merges their application spectra. The code is being used for the numerical simulation of large industrial applications, for example safety studies of power plants and electric equipment, of which some illustrative examples are presented in a companion paper.
